Burning by Jane Chambers
Burning by Jane Chambers
Jane Chambers was a pioneering lesbian playwright and poet who also wrote this subtle, wrenching novel of supernatural horror. The novel starts slowly, making the case that human social tendencies towards bigotry and gender-based power dynamics create more lasting terror and bloodshed than any ghost or ghoul ever could. Chambers, using a time travel trope to move the narrative forward, works to demonstrate that the brutal, violent discriminations of 300 years prior continue to infect the present. The cover illustration is by the incredible Rowena Morrill.
